Has this happened to anyone else? Even after putting waterproof tape over the clips I get chafing on the back of my ankles.

Neil Catley I've not had chafing yet, but I can certainly feel it. I am due to run a trail marathon on Sunday, and will be switching to lace-mounted for that. Hopefully the metrics will be still be good.....
Have you thoughts about the glue ? -
Alan Grose Using adhesive would make the most sense, but I rotate shoes throughout the week so would complicate things.
Can you post back here how close your lace mount metrics are to heel mount?
Thanks

Neil Catley Will do. Although having been injured and not trained properly for 4 weeks, my marathon metrics could be a bit of a mess! :(

Tim Clark Curious if you guys have any thoughts on how we might change the clips to reduce the irritation? I couple people have put physio-tape ala (http://www.rocktape.com/) - with some success. But it seems like such an individual thing -- combination of your shoe collar, your footstrike type, and your anatomy. For some it's OK. For others it's just nasty!
Alan -- I'm happy to send you a box of Sugru cradles and a bunch of Sugru if you'd like to try the adhesive? -
Alan Grose Tim, that would be great, I'd love to give it a try.
I'm wondering if I'm experiencing a shoe issue. Currently alternating between Altra Paradigm and Asics 33-M. Neither come in wide so I'm a half size up. They fill well, but there may be just enough movement to cause the irritation.

Ayse Sercan I had some chafing with the clip last week. I felt the clip for half the run, and had a little blister at the end. I noticed that the socks I was wearing were worn thin on the back, so on my next run I wore newer socks and had no trouble, even with the sore spot from the blister.
-
Rene Lorentzen I can feel the clips, but when wearing socks they dont irritate yet.
I however tried (mainly because i forgot my socks) to run without socks. That was a bad idea :).

S V I have 3 different running shows. On two of them it doesnt bother at all. On one pair it irritates zo much i can't wair the clips on them...

Eric Byers The Brooks 'Pure' series seems to have a very arched forward back of the heel. First run with just the clips were kind of brutal. Kinesio tape helped it a bit but still feels irritated. Is there an option to purchase the box of clips/sugru somewhere? :)
-
Alan Grose It looks as if my problems with the clips may have been largely self inflicted. I noticed that the clips had become bowed by the shoes, and tried a larger size clip.
No issues whatsoever in 5 miles tonight. I'm guess that the width of the back of the shoe at the top had the effect of spreading the clip and pushing the bottom into my heel.
With the larger clip the fit is a little looser in the shoe, but no chafing.
-
John Litschert Alan, Good to know. Wonder if we can redesign the clips to be wider at the bend and narrower down at the bottom of the clip.
Eric, Are you looking to get more sugru and adhesive cradles?
-
thinkingclown I too have a problem with the clip on a Hoka One One Conquest 2 (very cupped heel). After a 5k run I'm down a pair of socks (now holy and bloody from a new blister). My Hoka One One Cliftons look to have a similar heel cup, but have been using the laces clip without problems. Call me paranoid but I don't want to trust my runScribe to a sugru mount, I'd be lost without the runScribe. If the lace mount is as reliable (reporting the stats) as the heel, I'd love to purchase another lace clip or 2. If the heel is a better mount I'll experiment with the other thickness clips, but fear the cupping of the heel may not change the pain. As an alternate mount, I'd happily have some sort of pin go through the heel from the inside to clip the mount in place. Something like http://the-gadgeteer.com/2003/08/25/rivet_power_broker_kit_review/
Thoughts?

Eric Byers John, Yes! :) I am looking to get 2-3 more sets of cradles. I think I can get Sugru elsewhere but can't find these custom cradles :) Any chance they will be made available for purchase for those of us rotating through 3-4 sets of shoes?
-
Alan Grose Hi WayneG,
I've been trying to find the right combination for clips and have also been Sugruphobic. FYI, I've tried it on Altras for a few runs and it has held up fine. I did gently secure the rS with a piece of 1/2" waterproof tape just in case.
I also have a pair of Conquests, and it looks like it would hold by placing the cradle just above the deep ridge on the bottom rubber bumper, with the top of the cradle just below the fabric tab. I just with they came in wide sizes so I could wear them on longer runs.

Alan Grose I'm getting more comfortable with Sugru, but still really like the utility and flexibility of the clips.
As Tim pointed out in an earlier post, it seems to be a very individual thing. Some of us get chafing, but many don't.
I picked up a can of Plastidip www.plastidip.com at the local hardware store and coated the back of the clips with it.
Now, from the top of the bend to the bottom of the clip, i.e. the portion inside the shoe which could contact the back of the ankle, has a soft rubbery coating. I didn't coat the inside of the clip, so the teeth are still there and can grip the shoe if they were to ride up.
I'll run with these for a few days and report back how it goes.

Alan Grose Hoka Conquest - I tried fitting the clips on the shoe. Because of it's shape, it appears it would be difficult to get a good fit with any standard clip.
The top of the shoe at the heel is narrower than the bottom (sole). The shoe widens in a bell like shape from the top to the sole. This causes the clip to be flush with the shoe from the top to about 1/2" down. As the shoe shape changes, the clip remains straight and protrudes.
The rounding of the back of the shoe isn't an arc, so for instance on the left shoe, the outside of the clip is flush with the shoe while the inside is not.
The clips are a pretty good fit in the Hoka Bondi 3's.

Alan Grose I did another clip experiment that significantly raised the utility of clips from shoe to shoe, for me.
Rubber coating with plasticoat helped, and may be a solution for others, however I still had issues in shoes that bell out and are wider near the sole than at the collar of the heel.
This is a standard clip that has been dipped in plasticoat, in a Hoka shoe. Not the best picture, but it shows the curvature of the shoe causing the clip to protrude.
I used an Asics 33M as a model, and measured where the curvature of the shoe changed, causing the clip being straight to stick out away from the shoe, near the bottom of the clip. In my case it was 7/16" inch on a #3 or next to largest clip. YMMV depending on shoe, size and clip. I trimmed that off using a hack saw, and smoothed the edges with a file. Then I dipped them in plasticoat.
For those who are moderately handy and a little adventurous, this is what it looks like now, compared to the standard clip.
They also work for me in Altra Paradim and Hoka Conquest. However, there is so much variability between shoes that it's hard to see how there could ever be a one size fits all out of the box solution.
Form even plays into the equation for me. I can run in a shoe when fresh and they work great, yesterday it was 80 degrees and fatigue set in pretty quickly. I could feel the clip on one side the last few miles.
Over the past couple of weeks I've gotten over my initial concerns using Sugru and it's a great option, imo.
If anyone has thoughts on how this could be improved or have questions, please share them here.

dario.gabriel.perez The clips are unbearable, I ran for 7km (with socks) and definitely they almost hurt my ankles. I prefer to have extra pairs of clips for every pair of shoes.
-
Alan Grose Hi Dario,
I would try the following:
Test out the different sizes of clips to get the best fit.
Apply Kinesio tape directly to your ankles, where the clip will come in contact.
If you're up for it, try some of the modifications.
Otherwise, Sugru is a great alternative.

John Litschert Alan,
Thanks for all your suggestions and testing of the different clip configurations. I also find the sugru as a good option. I am using the lace mount more and more and think this is a good option moving forward for people that find the clips irritating and sugru a hassle. I have a cradle laced into each pair of shoes i use and just swap the scribe from shoe to shoe. Dario this might be an option if you really find the clips too irritating.
